Indian Stone Driveways Coventry

Natural Indian sandstone driveways, laid on a full mortar bed for cars. Character that standard paving can’t match.

We are DNA Driveways Coventry, the driveway and paving side of DNA Landscapes. Indian stone gives a drive the look of natural stone, in single colours or a mix, and we lay driveway-grade slabs the way a drive needs: on a full bed of mortar over a compacted sub-base.

Indian stone drives

Natural stone with character

Indian stone is sandstone, quarried in India and cut into slabs. Every slab varies a little in tone and texture, which is what gives an Indian stone drive its character. Lay it in mixed sizes and the surface looks natural rather than manufactured.

Colours

Single colour or a mosaic

Buff and grey are by far the most popular. Mixing colours such as dark and light blue-grey, rustic red and golden buff, each in several sizes, creates a mosaic effect that makes a drive unmistakably yours.

Kandala Grey, the stone on our Binley Woods job, is a good example of a single-colour grey: cool, even and contemporary. Choosing the same stone for a drive and patio ties the front and back of the house together.

If you’re doing paths or a patio as well, they can use thinner patio-grade slabs than the drive, which saves on cost.

How we lay it

Built to take a car

Driveway-grade stone

Thin 22mm calibrated stone is made for patios. A drive needs thicker, harder slabs that can carry the weight of a car.

A full mortar bed

Every slab goes down on a full bed of mortar, never spots of mortar under the corners, so there are no hollows to crack under a wheel.

A compacted sub-base

Under the mortar sits a compacted crushed-stone sub-base, set to the depth the ground needs.

A mortar-bedded stone drive is solid, so rain runs off it rather than through. We lay it to fall towards a channel drain, soakaway, lawn or border. That also keeps a front drive of more than 5m² clear of the planning rule on surfaces that drain onto the road.

Patios as well

Pricing

What an Indian stone driveway costs

Indian stone drives are priced at survey. The stone you choose, the thickness the drive needs, the area, and the base the ground calls for all make a real difference, so we price once we know them.

Aftercare

Looking after Indian stone

Sandstone is porous, so sealing it helps keep out stains and slows moss and algae. When it needs cleaning, it should be treated gently: a suitable cleaning agent, given time to work, then a low-pressure rinse. A high-pressure jet can scar the surface. Our driveway cleaning service does exactly that.

Questions

Indian stone driveway questions

How much does an Indian stone driveway cost?

Indian stone drives are priced at survey, because the stone, the slab thickness, the area and the base all affect the cost.

Can Indian stone be used for a driveway?

Yes, with the right stone and the right method. A drive needs thicker, driveway-grade slabs laid on a full mortar bed over a compacted sub-base. Thin patio stone on a sand bed will crack under a car.

What colours does Indian stone come in?

Buff and grey are the most popular, along with blue-greys, rustic reds and golden buffs. Mixing colours and sizes gives a mosaic effect.

Is Indian stone permeable?

Not when it is laid on mortar, as a drive should be. Rain runs off, so we lay it to fall towards a drain, soakaway, lawn or border.

Does Indian stone need sealing?

It isn’t essential, but sandstone is porous, so a sealer helps resist stains and slows moss and algae.

Can I have the same stone on my drive and patio?

Yes. The patio and paths can use thinner, patio-grade slabs in the same stone, which keeps the look consistent and saves on cost.
