To seal concrete after power washing it's important that the concrete be totally dry before coating it with sealer, so an important part of the process is to wait for all moisture to evaporate.

This simple task can take at least twenty-four hours or a couple of days, factors that will effect this will be the moisture levels in the the atmosphere and thickness of the concrete driveway. After the concrete has dried out, it is essential to seal it at the most appropriate time of day. The ideal moment for this would be mid-morning prior to the sun being directed over the concrete. This should give you ample time to apply the sealer without allowing it to dry too hurriedly. If sealer dries rapidly, it could lead to unpleasant streaks or lines which can ruin the final visual appeal.

Once the sealant has been opened it is carefully stirred before pouring out. Once poured it is spread out using a medium-nap roller or rubber blade for tarmac. This will ensure an even distribution of the sealant and that it gets into all of the concretes or tarmac pores and gaps.

To prevent sealant getting onto area which are not part of the driveway we use brushes get sealant to the very edge of the driveway.

After allowing the first coat to soak in the second coat is applied this will se much leas sealant as this will provide more or a top coat protective layer to your driveway, whereas the first coat provide more internal protection to the concrete or tarmac. We ensure that all areas ae thoroughly covered by overlapping roller strokes and rolling or brushing in different directions.

The process of sealing and protecting block paving are have some similarities to tarmac and concrete but some significant differences too.

If you have planned to seal your block paving then the pressure wash cleaning can be more aggressive as any jointing material which is flushed out will be replaced with new pointing sand.

It is very important for block paving to be dry before jointing or kiln dried sand is then brush in between the block pavers. This may mean a wait of a few days. However, once the jointing sand has ben brushed in then the first application of block paving sealant can be applied soon after that. Sealants for block paving are solvent based and are much thinner than those used for concrete and tarmac and can therefore coverage is achieved by spray application, although solvent free alternatives are now available. Again we need to be mindful of safety precautions, especially in windy days. After a gap of one to two hours a second coat of sealant can be applied. Ideally you should wait 3-4 hours before using the block paving after the second coat of sealant has been applied.

Whilst some people rarely clean or seal their driveway, as they see it as an unnecessary cost, it is not just a cosmetic procedure. The regular use of sealants for concrete and tarmac driveways go a long way in preventing damage to your driveway. It is much more expensive to replace or completely resurface a driveway so as well as avoiding these heavy costs cleaning and sealing your driveway will provide the added bonus that you will have a better looking driveway too. It will also lessen the amount of driveway cleaning and maintenance you will need to do throughout the year by inhibiting the growth or moss and weeds. Sealants will enhance the vibrancy of the colours of your driveway, which is especially the case for imprinted concrete. For block paving the sealant acts as a bonding agent between block and efflorescence is less likely to occur. The sealant provides a protective coat minimising the ingress of oil or other spillages from permanently staining your driveway and makes cleaning much easier when brushing up surface debris.
