Sealing for tarmac, concrete, imprinted concrete and block paving. Protection against water, frost, oil and weeds.
As DNA Driveways Coventry, part of DNA Landscapes, we seal the surfaces we lay. A sealed drive resists stains, keeps its colour and holds back moss and weeds, and it costs a fraction of resurfacing or replacing a drive that has been left to deteriorate.
Why seal
What sealing does for a driveway
Keeps water out
Water in small cracks freezes, expands and breaks the surface up. Sealing stops it getting in.
Resists stains
Oil and other spills sit on the surface instead of soaking in, so they clean up far more easily.
Slows moss and weeds
Less for growth to take hold of means less cleaning through the year.
Brings colour back
Especially on imprinted concrete. On block paving, it also binds the joint sand.
How we seal tarmac and concrete
Clean, dry, then two coats

The sealant is stirred, then poured -
Spread evenly with a squeegee or roller -
Worked into every pore
- Clean A thorough clean first, because sealing a dirty drive seals the dirt in.
- Dry A full day at least, more after rain or on thick concrete.
- First coat Applied mid-morning, before full sun, so it doesn’t dry too fast and streak. This coat soaks in.
- Second coat A lighter top coat, rolled in overlapping directions so nothing is missed.
Edges are cut in by brush to keep sealant off walls, kerbs and lawns. If the weather isn’t right on the day, we come back rather than do a poor job.
Block paving
Sealing block paving
Block paving is sealed differently. Because the joints will be re-filled, the clean can be more thorough. Once the blocks are completely dry, which can take a few days, kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints. A thinner sealer is then sprayed on, with a second coat an hour or two later. It’s fine to walk on after a few hours, and we’ll tell you when it’s ready to drive on.
The sealer helps bind the joint sand in place, which keeps weeds down, and makes efflorescence, the white bloom that can appear on new blocks, less likely.

Had your drive laid by us? Book it onto our annual clean and seal service and we’ll return every year to wash it down and renew the sealer, at a reduced rate for scheduled visits. This one is reserved for driveways DNA has installed.

Driveway sealing questions
How soon after cleaning can a drive be sealed?
We leave it a full day as a minimum, more if it’s been damp. The surface must be completely dry, or the sealer won’t bond properly.
Which driveways can you seal?
Tarmac, concrete, imprinted concrete and block paving, along with most porous paving stone used for patios.
Will pressure washing remove the seal?
Yes, a pressure wash will wear sealant away. That’s why any deep clean should be followed by re-sealing soon afterwards.
How long does sealed block paving take before I can use it?
You can usually walk on it after a few hours. We’ll tell you when it’s ready for cars, which depends on the sealer and the weather.
Is sealing worth it?
Sealing costs far less than resurfacing or replacing a drive damaged by water and frost, and it makes day-to-day cleaning much easier.
Do you offer regular sealing?
If we laid your drive, yes: our yearly clean and seal visits come at a reduced rate. It isn’t offered for drives laid by others.
