Why no two Binley Woods driveways are the same
Binley Woods grew plot by plot rather than as one estate. After the Coombe estate was auctioned in 1923, the woodland was felled and sold off in parcels, and by 1939 around 200 houses stood along Rugby Road and Woodlands Road. During the war, families leaving Coventry put up shacks, old tramcars and caravans on plots around Heather Road and Monks Road, and permanent homes replaced them over the following decades. The village took the name Binley Woods in 1961 and doubled in size between 1962 and 1974.
The result is a village where neighbouring houses can be decades apart, with different plot widths, frontages and levels. Some of the side roads stayed unmade tracks into the 1950s and 60s, which is one reason the ground under an older drive can't be taken for granted. We look at the existing base and the drainage at the survey before recommending a resurface over a full replacement, because a new surface on a weak base cracks or sinks within a few years.

Permissions for a new driveway in Binley Woods
Binley Woods has a Coventry postcode, but it sits outside the city boundary in Rugby Borough, Warwickshire. That means Coventry City Council has no say over your driveway. These are the bodies that do.
Dropped kerbs: Warwickshire County Council
Warwickshire County Council is the highway authority. You need its permission before the kerb is touched, and the kerb can only be lowered by an accredited contractor once that permission is granted.
Rugby Road is an A-road
Rugby Road through the village is the A428. A new access onto an A-road needs a planning application to Rugby Borough Council as well as the county's consent, so allow extra time if your house fronts it.
Front gardens over 5m²
Paving more than five square metres of front garden with a surface that drains onto the road needs planning permission. A permeable surface, such as permeable block paving, gravel or resin bound on a porous base, or drainage to a lawn or border, avoids it.

Do I need planning permission for a new driveway in Binley Woods?
Usually not, as long as the surface is permeable or the water drains to a lawn or border. Paving more than five square metres of front garden with a surface that runs off onto the road does need permission from Rugby Borough Council. Permeable block paving, gravel and resin bound laid on a porous base all let water drain through, so they don't need planning permission for that reason. Tarmac, concrete and standard block paving can still be used if we lay them to fall towards a lawn, border or soakaway.
