Coventry Block Paving

Block paving continues to be a sought after driveway, path and patio finish in Coventry. One of the main reasons for this is the variety and versatility block paving overs. If you're after a subtly unique drive this option gives you infinite possibilities allowing you to create a totally bespoke driveway for you.

Since bricks or blocks can be laid in a number of patterns and can be mixed and matched with relative ease. Whilst most people opt for a standard layout there really will be very little additional cost to incorporate a pattern using different coloured blocks laid out in certain positions and formations. We have instances here words, numbers and even pet animal shapes have been used along with more traditional square or diamond patterns. Please do bear in mind though that if this is unlikely to be your forever home that potential new homeowners may not share the same passion as your for their pet!

Block Paving in Coventry

Block paving in Coventry provides one of the stronger driveways surface finishes. This can vary between the cheapest to more expensive brick choices but even the cheaper bricks will provide a good level of robustness to your pathway. Another plus point which block paving has over most of the other driveway options is that it is made up by lacing adjoining bricks alongside each other, rather than once solid layer of surface material. This means that should there be an incident which causes damage to your driveway if your bricks are not able to withstand the impact it is a relatively straightforward task to remove the broken bricks and replace them with new bricks. Whilst initially it will be obvious which are the new bricks, over a short period of time the new ones will take on the same weathered appearance as the others. If you decide to do your replacement just after a jet wash you will struggle to tell which bricks have been replaced.

Block Paving Costs

The cost of block paving will depend on the total size of the area to be paved, along with the existing base, the state of the ground, slope and also what brick or brick types you will want to select. As a rough guideline for a small area a cost of around £120 a m2 with costs starting to drop when a total area greater than 40m2 is required. As with any cost predictions there are many other factors to look at as every driveway installation is unique so we always recommend getting a site quote.

Since it is important to ensure that bricks do not protrude and create a trip hazard the preparation of the groundwork is key - especially if there is a fairly steep slope to take into consideration. Too steep and block paving may not be a viable option. Obtaining a strong, stable base is vital to ensure that each block remains fixed in place. Sometimes this may require the sub base to be deeper which can also affect overall costs. An initial sealant will help retard the formation of weeds and moss to start with but will also allow water to drain through the gaps between blocks. Unless you have a sizable slope on of the other advantages of block paving is that water will naturally run through the bricks negating the needs for additional soakaways and drainage alterations to be made.

Block Paving Maintenance

Over time black paving will undergo an natural weathering process, which can't be avoided. Over time you may start to get the urge to freshen up your block paving. When you do it is important to follow a few simple rules to ensure your driveway continues to look and perform well for many years to come. Firstly, it is recommended that for the first few weeks after your block paving has been laid that any cleaning and maintenance is fairly gentle. Sweeping with a brush to collect lose, top debris, leaves or litter is advised to allow the jointing material between the bricks to set properly. The worst thing to do is to jet wash early on, as once the jointing material is dislodged the gaps created provide the perfect environment for seeds to into and moss and weeds to develop in the joints.

Once the jointing material has set then you can use warm soapy water and a stiff brush to give the bricks a gentle scrub. This process should allow you to keep on top of the build up of dirt on your bricks. If you have left cleaning for a whilst and there is a greater build up of dirt then a pressure washer can be used BUT only if you have your jointing sand on hand to brush into the gaps soon after you have completed your jet wash

  • Is block paving still one of the best driveway material?

Depends this continues and will always continue to be a contentious subject. Early versions of resin driveways using the bonded technique have lead to owners of this type of driveway wishing they never chose this in the first instance. However, using modern materials and choosing a resin-bound option will give you a modern low maintenance driveway. Block paving and tarmac continue to be good options as does Indian stone. Budget will play a large part in what driveway type is best for you and also what vehicles and activities will be carried out on your driveway too.

  • Do new driveways need to be permeable?

The short answer is no. However, if you choose a non-permeable option then you should expect to have a soak-away drain fitted too. There are some councils that require permission to be obtained to install a non-permeable driveway as the concern if that more water will be sent to the local drain system adding to the strain and increasing the potential for flooding. As a permeable surface permits water to soak through at the source, water will end up in the ground beneath your driveway, not the sewage system.

Block paving can be either, as can resin so please let us know if you have a preference.

  • Are Block Paving driveways low maintenance?

Most driveways will require little maintenance if they are looked after properly and sealed as advised. If left unattended for years then jet washing and / or spraying with a pathway cleaner can remove and delay new moss or weeds forming. New tarmac, patterned concrete and resin bound surfaces require the least maintenance in their early years compared to block paving

  • Can new patio slabs be laid on top of an existing grass or gravel bed?

They can but that's not how we'd do it. We would dig down and then install a suitable aggregate base which is stamped down before applying a sand base. Additional use of a weed membrane will restart the grown of weeds and a flat proper base will minimise movement and crack forming at joints where weeds can grow.

  • What block paving designs can Driveways Coventry do?

To be honest, we are only limited by your imagination. We have some more common block paving designs shown on our block paving page but essentially anything is possible provided the brick sizes are compatible.

  • How does block paving compare to the most expensive driveway?

Resin Driveways are generally the most expensive but if you search hard enough you can find certain block paving stones which will end up being pretty expensive but generally speaking a resin bound drive will cost the most and block paving will be near the lower end if selecting standard blocks .
